Your Daily Dose of Healthy Omega-3

It’s a fact: omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) are necessary nutrients that play a positive role in your whole body health. EPA & DHA are incorporated into your cell membranes, and are critical in keeping these cell membranes flexible. This is imperative to good heart, joint, and brain health, and current research continues to add to the list of omega-3 benefits. These are only a few reasons why a dose of healthy omega-3 should be at the top of your daily to-do list.

The Right Serving

How do you know you’re getting the “right” amount of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet? This can be confusing, as it depends on both your daily diet and your particular health goals. The American Heart Association recommends the equivalent of two servings of fish per week (for the purpose of gaining omega-3 intake), which is about 500 mg a day of omega-3 in supplement form. Of course, it’s always wise to consult your health care provider before supplementing with higher dosages than are usually recommended.

The Right Combinations

The typical American diet is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and excessive in omega-6 fatty acids. In fact, we consume on average 35 times more omega-6 than omega-3! It’s important to find the best balance between these two essential oils, both of which are needed for good health.

Recent scientific studies have set a healthy ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 from anywhere between 1:1 and 5:1. In other words, you should consume 1 mg of omega-3 for every 5 mgs of omega-6. When you consider the right dose of omega-3 for you, make sure to take into account your personal diet. Are you eating fish two or three times a week? If so, you may not need as high a supplemental dosage as a person who does not eat fish or other omega-3-rich foods. Additionally, if your diet is high in fish or high in foods with omega-6 oils such as vegetable oils and fried foods, then you may need to supplement with a higher dosage of omega-3 to achieve the right ratio. Of course, if you are taking prescription or other medications, make sure to check with your health care provider for the correct omega-3 dosage for your individual needs.
